The land ran out. So we forged an airship out of reclaimed cast iron, put four racks and a nuclear reactor in the basket, and flew the whole thing into a cloud, which is where the word came from and which also, conveniently, cools the core. You can see it from the garden.
In the first three months of 2026, objectors blocked or delayed 75 data centre projects worth about $130 billion. There are now 833 organised opposition groups across 49 states. Local opposition polls at 71 percent, which is worse than a nuclear plant polls, and that figure will become relevant further down the page.
There is still land, technically. All of it belongs to somebody who has now met their neighbours and formed a committee. So we went up, where the zoning ends, the committees do not convene, and the only resident is a seagull who is on our payroll under a collective agreement she negotiated without representation and won.
A grey box. Nine acres. Eighteen months of hearings. One hundred megawatts. Cannot be moved, ever, for any reason.
A large friendly balloon made of iron with a reactor in it. Moves at 38 knots. Currently over Kazakhstan. Nobody voted on it.
Zero litres withdrawn. We do not take the water anywhere. We fly into it, warm it slightly, and leave it where it was.
Every Lakehurst hull is forged from cast iron at the Völklinger Hütte in Saarland, an ironworks that ran from 1873 to 1986 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Reopening a World Heritage Site to build aircraft was, in fairness, the hardest conversation of the year.
Cast iron is heavy, brittle, and the single worst material ever selected for a flying machine. It is also fully reclaimed, sourced within 400 kilometres, and forged in a furnace that was going to sit there anyway. That makes it sustainable. Sustainable was the criterion we were given, and we met it.
An intake scoop under the forward keel draws cloud through the heat exchanger. The cloud takes the heat. The cloud leaves marginally warmer than it arrived and continues on its way, being a cloud. Our coolant is free, renewable, self replenishing, and moves itself, which no ground based operator can say about a reservoir.
In the absence of cloud, primary coolant is unavailable. The Customer acknowledges that Section 4.1(b) and this Section describe the same weather.
4.1(c) is one sentence long. We would prefer you read it on a nice day, although a nice day is precisely when it applies.
Our footprint is fully offset. We plant 400,000 trees a year in the Amazon basin. The trees are taken from Africa. Several people have raised this with us and we have listened carefully to all of them. The trees are net additional in Brazil, the accounting closes, the certificate is issued, and net zero is the standard we were asked to meet.
Two of our auditors have declined to sign. One signed and asked that we not use his name. We have not used his name. We have used his signature.
Shell to Table delivers food by ballistic arc using a decommissioned railway gun, across the same airspace we occupy. Food delivery by artillery and cloud compute in the cloud have not, historically, gone hand in hand.
We therefore run a shared corridor protocol. Gunnar telephones before every firing window. Gerald is the gun. Gerald does not telephone. Agreed vertical separation is 40 feet, which sounds thin and is, but it has held for 1,140 consecutive firings and neither party wishes to renegotiate it in front of a regulator.
| When | Who | What must happen |
|---|---|---|
| T minus 40 min | Gunnar | Telephones the vessel from extension 7 and states the firing window |
| T minus 20 min | Vessel | Confirms altitude, heading and beam width in writing |
| T minus 6 min | Vessel | Climbs 40 feet. Forty feet is the agreed separation |
| T minus 0 | Gerald | Fires |
| T plus 90 sec | Both | Confirm the parcel and the airship are in different places |
A city receives, simultaneously and at terminal velocity, one 40 MW pressurised water reactor and approximately 3,400 SanDisk 990 EVO solid state drives. We have modelled this. The modelling was stopped by the person doing the modelling.
The vessel is insured. The vessel is not the problem. The problem is standing in front of a living city afterwards and explaining, out loud, with a microphone, why it is now covered in nuclear waste and consumer NVMe storage. There is no version of that sentence that goes well. Gerald has never fired early. Gerald has fired late twice. Both files are closed.
Cloud shall mean a visible aggregate of minute water droplets suspended in the atmosphere. Service shall be available only while the Vessel is within such an aggregate. Clear conditions constitute a suspension of service, are contemplated by this Agreement, and are not an Incident.
Availability is reported in oktas, the meteorological unit for how much of the sky is covered, nought to eight. Enterprise is contracted at six. We are running 4.8. In June an anticyclone parked over the fleet for nineteen days. We published no postmortem, because the postmortem would have read: it was nice out.
When a region is unreachable it is not down. It is resting. It has gone off to look at the weather and will return the moment the weather worsens, which is the opposite of what anyone wants from infrastructure and is nonetheless the product.
Everyone else uses region names for geography. We use them for airships. The ship called us-east-1 has not been over us-east since November 2024 and we would rather not go into it.
| Vessel | Racks | Core | Where it is | State |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| us-east-1 | 4 | 40 MW | Kyzylorda Oblast, 41 days off station | Airborne, permitting dispute |
| eu-central-1 | 4 | 40 MW | North Sea, holding, inside cloud | Airborne, healthy |
| ap-southeast-2 | 11 | 40 MW | Cardington, tied to the mast | Grounded since 4 May |
Multi region redundancy needs two ships 40 km apart by regulation, so replication lag runs between 4 ms and, in one incident involving Margaret, six hours. Margaret is unrepentant.
An airship that loses weight rises. Add instances and the ship takes on mass and sinks out of the cloud. Take them away and it climbs until the valves open and release helium we bought at EUR 41 a cubic metre in open competition with hospital MRI departments. Both directions leave the coolant behind.
Provision and the ship takes on weight and sinks. Terminate and it gets light, climbs to pressure height, and vents helium it will never see again. Stay in the white bit. The white bit is also the coolant.
Scaling down is the only button here that costs money. Every cost optimisation exercise ever conducted by a Lakehurst customer has increased their invoice and lowered their coolant margin. Both are disclosed at signing and neither has changed a purchasing decision.
Every vessel provides 7G to the ground beneath it. 7G is four generations beyond anything commercially deployed anywhere. We are unable to tell you what 6G was, or what 5G Advanced did differently, and we did not stop to find out, because the number is higher and the beam is visible from a garden. Customers have been satisfied.
Coverage is a 240 metre ellipse directly below the vessel, moving at 38 knots. If you would like continuous 7G you will need to walk at 38 knots. Nobody has yet asked for a refund on this basis, although one customer in Cardington has come close and is now very fit.
Compute hours are an accounting fiction invented to disguise the fact that nothing is happening inside a building. There are six people aboard your data centre right now and one of them is making tea next to a reactor.
| Tier | Per flight hour | Racks | Lift | Crew |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LZ-129 Standard | EUR 2,140 | 4 | Helium | 6 |
| LZ-130 Enterprise | EUR 4,880 | 11 | Helium | 14 |
| Economy Lift | EUR 614 | 11 | Hydrogen | 14 |
Economy Lift costs a tenth of the tiers above it and carries eight percent more, because hydrogen is cheaper than helium and lifts better than helium. It beats both premium products on every published metric. It is our fastest growing line. It is also flying beside a reactor, which we mention only because somebody will ask.
Economy Lift is unavailable to customers who have read the company’s naming history. Forty one accounts are on it. None have left. Two asked what the catch was and were referred to page 14 of the enclosed pamphlet. There is no pamphlet.
Tours run on the second Thursday of the month, weather permitting, which here means weather requiring. Ninety minutes aboard a working vessel. You will stand beside the racks. You will stand slightly further from the core.
Sold out through 2029. Fourteen people have completed a tour. Eleven have completed the quarantine. We do not know what is up there. The crew do not know what is up there. The crew have stopped asking, which we have chosen to read as confidence.
Transcribed from a call with a fund that later declined. We publish it in full because we believe our position holds.
Taken from the minutes of an infrastructure investment committee, reproduced with the permission of the member who leaked them.
That values Lakehurst at ten billion dollars. We own three cast iron airships, three reactors, a reopened World Heritage Site, a mast lease in Bedfordshire and a seagull. We consider the number conservative. Amazon is spending two hundred billion dollars this year on buildings that cannot move, in towns actively trying to stop them.
Use of funds: helium, fuel rods, insurance, one further mooring mast, and the legal costs of Margaret’s outstanding grievance. Nothing is allocated to land, because there is none, because there is none left.
Can see it from the kitchen. Wave at it most mornings. Have not deployed anything. Took the tour. Still in quarantine. Would go again.
Lost a database in June when it went sunny for nineteen days. My fault for not reading 4.1(b) or 4.1(c). Have since scaled to zero twice. Invoice has gone up. Would recommend.
My production region spent March over Kazakhstan. Nobody told me. I worked it out because I could not see it any more.
You cannot hot swap a drive at 4,200 feet in a crosswind beside a reactor. Failed disks stay where they died. We call it graceful atmospheric degradation, which is accurate twice.
Subcontracted to Shell to Table, whose railway gun is the only affordable way to reach altitude carrying a drive. Eleven attempts, three arrived intact, one arrived early.
Every contract ships binoculars. Tickets are answered with a bearing and an elevation. Our SOC 2 was conducted from the ground because the auditor declined to fly.
Named for Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. Hulls forged at the Völklinger Hütte, Saarland. Registered office: Hangar 1, Cardington. Sales handled by Gunnar, extension 7, between 0900 and 1100, weather permitting. The LCAA has held our airworthiness application for 847 days and in March requested a pamphlet. We submitted a pamphlet. It was returned. We have submitted a second pamphlet describing the first.
